So the longed for reward is the princess for himself there’s no altruism here as in the other books. The young man wants the princess for a wife and it quickly becomes obvious that she feels the same way about him. This is more of a traditional fairy tale. What I didn’t like as much here as in the other two books was the motive. The black and white and gray illustrations are okay I really liked a few of them. The cover illustration is the only one in color. I appreciated the work ethic of Pong Lo, and how he worked hard and worked his way up. I love most how doubling the grains of rice every day leads to such a large number of grains of rice in not that many days. It takes place in fifteenth century China. These two books are One Grain Of Rice A Mathematical Folktale by Demi and The Rajah's Rice A Mathematical Folktale from India by David Barry. They each have the subtitle: A Mathematical Folktale. The illustrations were colorful and appealing. They took place in India and the motive for requesting the grain of rice was to better the condition of the people of the land. I’ve read two other versions of this mathematical folk tale, and I think I enjoyed both of those stories more than this one.
